Nibblers!

About a year ago we got the kids these caterpillar tends that you could hatch them in. You had to send off for the caterpillars and such. We decided however, rather than introduce another species into the area, why not go out and find some that are already in the area. We wanted to revisit this project this year. Its really great fun, and highly educational. The kids have learned something new and exciting each time we have done it.

I snapped some images of the little critters nibbling on their preferred leaves. They seem to only attach their silk tents to apple, cherry, or plum trees. There are several wild cherry, and wild apple varieties in our area of West Virginia. Alot of people call these little guys pest, but we just find them facinating.
